An Indiana man pleaded guilty to neglecting his mentally disabled 15-year-old granddaughter, who was found weighing just 40 pounds and covered in feces in a locked room.
On Tuesday, 58-year-old Steve Sells pleaded guilty to 12 counts of child neglect and five counts of welfare fraud, theft, and perjury.
Prosecutors said his wife and daughter, who are also facing multiple charges, will not be offered plea agreements.
In December, Sells’ granddaughter was found dying of starvation.
According to court documents, the girl was brutally beaten, forced to eat feces, and drink urine.
The girl was kept locked in a room smeared with blood and excrement.
Since December, the girl has undergone a “miraculous” recovery, Prosecutor Rodney Cummings told Fox 59, adding she now weight around 100 pounds and is “very outgoing” and “cheerful.”
