An Oregon couple was sentenced to prison after they were found guilty of severely abusing their 11-year-old.
The victim’s stepmother, 35-year-old Angela Marie Millard, was sentenced to 17 years behind bars after being found guilty of three counts of second-degree assault and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment.
The victim’s father, 38-year-old Lawrence James Millard, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of second-degree assault and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment.
Prosecutors say Angela broke the boy’s teeth with a hairbrush, tied him up with rope and left him alone for long periods of time, burned his hands, and denied the child medical care and food.
The father beat the child with a table leg, denied him medical care, and left him alone while he was tied up.
The abuse in question occurred around Thanksgiving 2014 and the boy did not receive medical attention until late January when a relative took him to see a nurse who contacted 911.
“This is one of the most egregious cases of child abuse in which the child is not dead,” Jackson County Deputy DA Virginia Greer told the Mail Tribune, adding the child will have limited mobility in his hands for the rest of his life as a result of the abuse.
“I believe the psychological effects will extend the rest of his life,” Greer said.
In court, Angela pleaded for leniency, saying, “What I did was horrible and I can’t take it back. I will never forget this. All I can say is I’m sorry and I wish my son were here so I could ask for his forgiveness.”
