A Connecticut babysitter was sentenced to 14 years behind bars for her role in the death of a 19-month-old child she was caring for.
On Wednesday, 29-year-old Kinjal Patel was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.
Patel was looking after 19-month-old Athiyan Sivakumar last year when the boy suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.
The child was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say Patel initially claimed the boy slipped on the floor and fell, hitting his head.
Patel later admitted to detectives that she became angry and pushed the child in the face, causing him to fall and hit his head.
The boy passed away three days after the incident.
Patel later told police that the boy would not eat his food and spat in her face. She admitted she picked the child up and slammed him into the kitchen floor three times before shaking him back and forth.
Patel was already under investigation by Child Services after the boy suffered cuts to his face a month earlier.
The parents agreed to stop hiring Patel but apparently continued to use her services anyway.
The parents are now charged with “risk of injury” as a result.
