A South Carolina couple was charged with murder after their six-year-old daughter passed away last month.
On Saturday, police in St. Helena Island arrested 24-year-old Antonio Coaxum and 25-year-old Dajaa Fields on charges of homicide by child abuse.
On July 7, the parents called 911 when 6-year-old D’Naja Fields became unresponsive.
“Both admitted to striking the child with a belt and their hands and apparently she became very unresponsive and that’s when they transported her to Beaufort Memorial Hospital,” Lt. Colonel Bill Neill told WJCL.
The girl was transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where she died three days later.
“We’ve had similar situations with child abuse and it’s unusual for it to lead to the death of a child and it’s also something that’s widespread,” Neill told the station. “It happens but in this situation it appears the beating went to the level to cause severe injuries to the child.”
