An Alabama woman was sentenced to death for the torture and murder of her young stepchildren.
On Thursday, Heather Leavell-Keaton was sentenced to death by lethal injection six months after the children’s father, John DeBlase, received the same sentence.
Prosecutors say Keaton poisoned the children, 5-year-old Natalie and 3-year-old Chase, by putting anti-freeze in their food. Eventually, Keaton strangled the two toddlers to death.
The court heard that Natalie suffered months of torture, being burned with cigarettes and hot candle wax, before Keaton duct-taped her and stuffed her in a suitcase for 12 hours.
After she removed her from the suitcase, she choked her to death and dumped her body in a garbage bag in the woods.
Three months later, when Chase began to ask about Natalie in public, Keaton believed the boy became a “liability.”
He is believed to have been choked to death in December of 2010 and disposed off in the woods where his body was found several days later.
