A Russian woman who killed her 2- and 4-year-old children has been admitted to a psychiatric facility claiming to be suffering from depression caused by a crash diet.
Reports say 27-year-old Gulnaz Mukhametzyanova was in good health before she started a diet that helped her lose more than 55 pounds.
Local media reports that the stress of the diet regimen caused her to have a breakdown and sent her into a spiral of depression.
Although the family sought the help of psychiatrists, Mukhamentzyanova reportedly found her children dirty after playing outside and drowned them while saying they were covered in maggots.
The mother reportedly admitted to drowning her children afterwards to her psychiatrist, saying, “I killed my children” because she wanted to “kill the maggots.”
The woman has been hospitalized and is unable to answer questions from police.
