A Georgia woman and her parents were arrested after they reportedly starved three children.
On Saturday, police in Rome arrested 28-year-old Brandie Wheeler, 51-year-old Richard Calvert, and 55-year-old Belinda Hick on child cruelty charges after a concerned citizen asked authorities to check on the children inside the home.
Police found the refrigerator chained and padlocked so that the three children, all between 3 and 11 years old, couldn’t open it.
Court documents say that at least two of the children were also locked in their rooms every night.
“I’ve never seen anything like this, where the children have been locked in the rooms at night,” Floyd County Police Sgt. Rusty Williams told WXIA. “I’ve never seen where they’ve been denied food, any time they want food. It just, it shocks your conscience to think about it.”
All three have been charged with child cruelty. Calvert and Hick have also been charged with false imprisonment and reckless conduct.
The three children have been placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services.
