A British woman was given a suspended prison sentence after she left her baby daughter to die while she drank and had sex with a man she met at a bus stop.
Police say 32-year-old Yvonne Adkins abandoned her 3-month-old daughter Shanelle, who was suffering from medical problems, overnight while she frolicked with her new lover.
Police say the two drank whiskey and had sex for nine hours until he had to go to work and she fell asleep.
Later that morning Adkins found her baby daughter unresponsive.
Neighbors who knew Adkins said she was unfit to be a mother.
“This was an accident waiting to happen,” a neighbor told the Daily Mirror. “People were always coming and going at the flat.”
At her sentencing hearing, Judge David Fletcher spared the mother prison time but told Adkins, “Your desire to engage in some sexual activity with someone you hardly knew resulted in you leaving your child downstairs when you knew it was not appropriate to do that. You made a catastrophic decision that you will have to live with for the rest of your life.”
Adkins was given a suspended 18-month prison sentence and 18 months of supervision.
