A Welsh woman suffering from severe mental illness attacked her two children after believing she saw a “hidden message” in an episode of the drama CSI. She is now on trial in Cardiff, Wales.
Sadie Jenkins “feared that a Mafia hit man with a teardrop tattoo would torture and brutally kill the baby girl and 7-year-old boy unless she did something, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Philip Joseph said,” according to the New York Daily News. Dr. Joseph said she was “in the grip of a psychotic illness and out of touch from reality.”
When a man bearing multiple teardrop tattoos appeared on her television screen, Jenkins thought it was a sign to act and “save” her kids from “a fate worse than death.” She grabbed a steak knife and slashed her seven-year-old’s neck, then her baby, and finally herself.
A neighbor heard the screams and wrestled the knife off of her. The children were rushed to the hospital, where surgery saved their lives, according to the BBC.
Jenkins also abused drugs, specifically amphetamines. Though it is unclear if her drug abuse caused the psychotic break or if her drug use was an attempt at “self-medication.”
The trial is ongoing.
